Finished products - before editing

We chose the cartoon effect for the front cover which was inspired by the original CD cover this is also a running theme for most of their other CD covers aswell. We also chose the grey for the back cover beacuse we like the contrast between the light and dark and also it conveys a meaning as mention in a earlier post.

This is our advert for our magazine this will be inside a magazine , e.g the hmv leaflet, fashion magazine, music magazines also like vibe and nme. We need to improve the hmv logo By removing the white and add the price of the cd. Also take some of the harsness out of the picture so it is more soft to match its surrounding and add the picture copyright and brighten up the SSSHHHHH in the left hand corner.

Final Proposal for CD cover and Advert

CD cover

Use screen grabs from the music video for the front and back cover. The front cover will be colour with bold bright writing may have an effect on it to look like a painting. The image for this could be the lips or a scene filmed in the snow. The back will be black and white with and effect on it, either a sketch or a grain. The images that could be used is the walking towards the water, water rippling or the pulling away of the hands. We chose it to be like this because it is like what the girl is feeling split between the two ones is making her happy (front with bright colours) i think the side view of her in the snow is the best because she looks vunerable and the (back) her sad and upset. the image with her walking away is the best because there is sunlight in the picture which shows there is hope and possible happiness even though it is breaking through the dark mood.

Advert

Using the HMV duffy advert layout. but with colour instead to match the CD cover and use a image featured in the music video in the clip with the array of photos, the image best suited is the one where she looks as if she is thinking about something.

CD cover

For the CD cover we are thinking of using lips and maybe a screen grab of part of the music video or a picture used in the music video for the back. for the inside of the CD case we will use shot fifteen with the scattered photos so when you lay the CD case down on the desk it is like you see the scene when she is looking at the photos.

Another ideas to turn the lips into a flower in the front cover by repeating the lips and have them coming from the center for the back of the case a photo of a mic using the wire to create a heart on the stage and for the inside a persons mouth with there fingers to there lips saying sshh.

Another idea is to have the performer in black and white styled (a bit like Cheryl Cole's album) with red lips but in black and white and for the back a different pose with fingers to the lips saying sshh. for the inside use the picture of the to girls walking away holding hands.

Another idea is to use the same front cover idea as above but have a picture featured in the music videos as the background looking like we are viewing it through the glass.

Another idea is to use screen grabs from the shots of the music video filmed out
doors with the artist posing in different ways on all the front cover surface.

This is one of our early ideas we used images from the Internet a manipulated the front cover to look like pop art using distorting the image and highlighting the red lips and placing the album title and and artist name around. we blured the image on the back and placed the barcode, copyright and record company on the back along with the tracklist. We felt the cover was to plain and did not go with the song if we chose a different genre of music them maybe it would have worked better.

Advert

I like this advert because the use of her make up and hair standing out. i like the use of graffiti for the words giving it an edgy look and making it different and stand out from the conventional posters. It does not give much information about the CD except the month there is no information about where you can get it from. Despite not giving much information it creates a buzz of people wondering and want to search for it. The way she is looking directly at the camera makes you feel like she is looking at you.
I like this advert because it can be taken straight from the music video and just add the words around the performer. The fact it is a screen grab from the performance and not a staged photograph. It is in the moment seeing the artist do there thing.
i like the style of this advert. the hmv logo stands out amongst the black and white. I like how effective the black and white creates a mood. it also follows how our CD cover is with black and white and color. this could be seen in a music or fashion magazine because the picture looks like a editorial picture, the main focus is always on the artist because that is the whole background.

Filming Schedule

Casting

Three actors are going to perform the main girl in the narrative who is also our performer. She will have around 4 outfit changes for various locations and different memories. The boyfriend who will have around 1 outfit and the other girl (the secret) will have around 2. The props that will be used is a mobile phone, lipstick and photographs. locations to be used is different areas of the park and the town center.

Final Proposal

Working title: No Doubt - Don't Speak
Channel for broadcast: 4 music because it shows various genres of music so not restricted because the song doesn't really have a genre. Has specials where it shows music from certain years and artist videography of there career so far. On the other hand the channel most appropriate would be MTV classic because the song was made in 1996 even thought the clothes featuring in our production are going to be more modern the song still fits in that era we have just taken a new interpretation of the lyrics.
Target Audience: 17 + male and female gender, all class and ethnicity because there is more than one meaning to the song therefore it can be interpreted in many different ways depending on the listener and it depends on the listeners style of music whether they like the song.
Genre: The type of music video that we have portrayed is a combination pf performance and storyline because we want to show a mix of shots and create depth to the lyrics by showing flashbacks of what a lead role and performer is thinking about as she is singing.
Style: over saturating of colours we want to stand out, b&w to show the past and also having a higher white balance to make it seem dream like and hazy. Overlapping of scenes to show the jumble of memories. Slow motion to show actions which are crucial to our storyline.

Storyboard

Due to some problems with finding a stage to do the performance we had to change locations and some of the scenes we used the park to replace the performance pieces and more use of the extreme close up of the lips. Also scene 8 has been replaced with the new scene 8 in parts on the last storyboard page. This would help fill in some gaps and add more depth to the narrative. There has been additional changes where the house shots has been removed and in place added more shots have been added in the snow.

Of those 80% that said yes they said it makes the music video interesting and draws the audience attention and makes them stop stop from changing channel or to a next song and keep watching. Of those 20% who said no they said it ruins flow and it can ruin whole narrative. this tells us that if we use special effects use it when needed or create a effect that matches the mood created by the song e.g black and white for a flashback or sepia to crate an old feel

WHAT MAKE A MUSIC VIDEO CAPTIVATING?

we asked people what makes a music video captivating? we wanted to find out what attracts them to watch the video so we know what and what not to include in our video they replied that there had to be a great storyline, that it should convey the meaning of the song, special effects with a mix of locations, performance by the artist, a storyline that relates to the lyrics. so we know that the music video would be boring with one location and it would be confusing if the storyline does not relate to the lyrics.

TO THE SONG "DON'T SPEAK" BY NO DOUBT WHAT WOULD YOU VISUALISE THERE TO BE IN THE MUSIC VIDEO?

20% of the people have never heard of it, of those who have heard the lyrics said things like:

"storyline with abstract sections"

"female lead with a narrative"

"couple breaking up and arguing"

some had very different ideas about what the same song video could be like, which showed how versatile this song is to many situations which helped us think more about ideas for our music videos and how we could add things

Role Allocation

I am working in a group of two we have allocated roles to each other which play to our strengths i am doing some Editing because that is my strength and Sheema is Director we are both going to share the camera work and have are writing the storyboards and things that are going to be written. We are both film producers we will be overseeing the process and coordinating how the shots are and how the storyboard plans out

History of music videos

A music video is a short film that accompanies a piece of music. It is used as a marketing device to promote the song, they are also used to make a buzz and get people talking about it. They became more popular in the 1980's when MTV based a station to them. in 1981 was when MTV first launched playing music videos 24/7 soon after other stations followed with slots for music videos to be played. Now MTV plays some music videos and TV programs, also you can watch some on their website as well.

Music Videos come in different styles abstract, animation, live action e.g concert clips and documentaries e.g. feed the world - Michael Jackson. Some music videos take the song lyrics literally and some do not. Some try and send a message to the viewer whether it is about love, peace and death. The music video allows the viewer to see the artist without them making a personal appearance or the fan going to the concert.

In the 21st they are now just as popular as songs themselves, being sold in collections on video tape and DVD or on itunes where you buy and watch music videos on the move to what ever song you want that has a video. As technology is improving since when MTV first started we can now watch it on the Internet and share amongst friends on websites like You Tube and Facebook. Anyone music video can be seen online and gain hits. some are leaked and can be viewed before they reach on TV creating a media hype around the song.
Since the beginning of music videos there are now Thousands music channels and music video shows around the world which reinvent and adapt the way they show music videos. New music videos styles are also emerging called unofficial videos made by the fans of the artist which is then posted online using cartoons or remixed with clips from other videos, also lip syncing to the song.

Don't Speak - No Doubt

The video begins in a forest where a man picks off a fruit the scene reminds me of the Adam and eve story only this one has a dark twist in which the fruit is rotten. There is the fly which features on the album cover on which this song is featured. Close up of mans head where the fly was the song begins. there is a different location which is less of a fantasy and more realife. we hear the man brush his head the camera goes to a medium shot the first cords played on the guitar which starts the camera moving it remains a medium shot allowing band members to enter and exit the shot. The man on the guitar does not look at Gwen Stephani as if upset or disappointed. A close up of Gwen Stephani shows her emotion as she looks of to a distance, extreme close up of the drum player shows us what she was looking at he shows no emotion when he looks up showing us he is hurt and and angry towards Gwen Stephani. The camera has movement through the whole song so it feels like a story you are following like a book or you are a by stander watching the scene unfold. The main focus is always on Gwen Stephani because she is the lead singer, when Gwen is in some shots and the band members are behind they are blurred out. There is a continuity error because when Gwen is in front of the drummer and the base player, the guitarist is on the left hand side of the drummer but when it goes closer up and removes Gwen from the shot he has gone also even though they only zoomed in. Use of archive footage is a flash back and a memory of what the band was like they made eye contact and had a connection and energy. The use of glitter and a cross dissolve to another memory, this connects with the word she is saying "our memories they can be exciting..." it feels like we are in her mind. long shot of the band their lighting is different dark and gloomy unlike Gwen Stephani which is bright and gives her a glow. There is a close up of Gwen but this time she is blurred out and the band is in focus we see them discussing something. Returns back to the garage back to basics maybe where there career all began and where they want to end it so the scene has a connection with the artist simple natural light unlike the stage light. darker images of the man's memories as if it is fading before his eyes close up of his expression as he replays the memory. As the music plays we see the seen that explains all the tension for those who don't keep up with the music magazines or watch it in the future. Where the photo shoot is reminds me of the beginning with the garden of Eden it is as if Gwen Stephani is eve and picked the forbidden fruit. they combine the memory with the present by making her catch the flowers she threw out to the audience. The video ends by rewinding the beginning so he places the fruit on the tree as if closing the story.

alicia keys

The videos uses different eras this is apparent from the colors and the grain in the camera the props and the clothing show this as well. what is effective is how they change era without having to move either there is an object in the way or a shot reverse shot. We see different locations which is a convention of a music video. I Like how some of the narrative disturbs the song so we know what the argument was about this is useful to let the audience catch on to the story line if it is not obvious or so we know what the characters are saying in their narration. It also has a scene where the artist is performing with just trees around her even though she is the main character in the narrative this separates her from the story so we feel as though we are watching he performance. I like how they use a typical story the love, but presenting it in not a typical fashion so therefore it feels different when you watch it even though the story repeats itself over and over thought the whole video by changing how people react and what happens we feel like it is a different story and different characters even though it is the same people. The song can be interpreted in different ways love, secrets, young love, gay lovers. depending on how the song makes you think about it there are many other ways this can be interpreted.

ideas for music video

Storyline Idea 1

There is a girl that is with her boyfriend but no longer has feelings for him.

She surprisingly has feelings for another girl.

She finally plucks up the courage to tell him, however feels extreamly guilty as she still very much cares for him as a friend.

She breaks up with him to unveil that she has has mutual feelings towards her female friend.

This uses both narrative and performance.

In her performance using flashbacks we see the good times the bad times and acceptance to who she really is.

Storyline Idea 2

There is a girl performing on stage with her band, facing an audience.

There would be props on stage to compliment the performance.

Different shots and camera angles would be used whilst filming the performance to show skill.

Have the feel of a concert performance.

Lots of editing e.g. slow motion and split screen

Different camera angles and moving so the audience feel part of the performance.

Storyline Ideas 3

abstract video with the use of just lips different colours of lipstick different peoples lips to make the video the lips morph to the other lips a bit like the micheal jackson black or white video. they sing the words of the song.

to make this more interesting we would multiply the lips use reflectioins and distortions and layer peoples lips

Disney pixar for the birds video

Disney Pixar: for the birds animation

Beginning : one bird on a telephone wire enjoying the space

Middle : more little birds come and take up the room a big bird comes and hogs the remaining space

End: Birds get thrown off and lose feathers and big bird gets last laugh

Begins with company logo which is standard with
PIXAR films. It goes straight into the title sequence, there is a tracking shot along the telephone wire introducing us to the scene. Music plays through out the whole film by increasing and decreasing volume when sounds are heard and thing are said. The non diegetic sound is the music which creates an atmosphere. The diegetic sounds is of the birds which sound like squeaky toys and the little bit of dialogue the big bird makes which is "Hi" which sounds childish as if resembling primary school and there is a new student.

Cut to a close up of birds arguing over the space they have on the wire. zoom out to show the amount of small birds on the wire all
arguing and how they stop we see the wind from what ever went past or what has arrived. long shot of big bird as if looking from the closest birds point of view, medium close up of the small birds reaction to the big bird as they appear from behind the closest one. medium close up of big bird then back to the small birds using a shot reverse shot having a silent conversation. Zoom out to see how the small birds react to the new arrival. medium shot as big bird waits in anticipation we as the audience feel sorry for him because he seems dumb and the small birds are picking on him despite them being cuter. cut to an establishing shot of them moving away from him, close up as they discuss him. long shot of the big entering the space taking this as a acceptance, medium shot of the birds as they fall out of shot this is affective because the audience want to follow where they have gone. close up as little birds slide towards big bird and cry out in pain. close up as big bird celebrates the how the bird pecks him and he flips upside down. cut to a close up of birds foot moving and extreme close up of two birds reaction, by putting these two shots side by side we see that a plan has come into there head and what they want to move. long shot of problem being created by their plan. Zoom into a medium shot of the birds expressions as they get thrown out of shot and feathers scatter. A diegetic twang happens as they get thrown. close up of featherless birds , medium shot as they are embarrassed and panic as the big bird laughs. the end credits are a cloud which remains the background through out the film, there is no change of location but the different section of sky use in each camera angle makes it feel different.

Despite there hardly being no English except the occasional "hi"and jumbled words from the big bird, there was mainly squeaks from the little birds because their reactions and facial expressions and also the pitch the squeak was at you could tell what they are feeling.

How much do you love me?

Start straights, the door opening sound non diegetic to what you can see which is a tap. A diegetic sound of foot steps and talking close up of feet, yellow pages. Close up of the two main character. Fade to title sequence with music the title is red and white the colours you see on valentines day. Every time there is a change of scene it fades to black with a music beat. Short scenes with different incidents that have happened in their life as if getting us the viewer decide the answer to the question to the title. Only the man speaks for the first couple of scenes. We always see a close up of the woman's reactions to what the man has said. He then answers the question to the title. We see the woman's reactions on a close up of her face as she reads the note and close up of parts of he body, arms knocking things down, feet as she climbs the stairs and hear a couple of screams. Fast transitions to show her anger and frustration. Dramatic tension music then the same repeated beat comes on again and a medium shot of her reaction and the realisation. On the final credits we finally hear the woman speak.

The shorts scene are clips from their life, from buying a house, hosting a dinner party, breakfast, TV time, gardening, days out. Even though the clips are short you feel apart of their everyday life and you add your own everyday situations which the man may add his favourite line into and ways the woman may react. The camera is hand-held to feel like your a fly on the wall looking into this couples life

This is the life - Craig

He used a hand held camera like a fly on a wall. There is then a close up of mum expression to introduce us to the chaos of the kitchen. There is non diegetic sound which bridges from the kitchen scene to the boy alone. Montage of the brother and sister having fun close bond, no dialogue just facial reactions to know their feelings. We can see the sister looking after the brother. The dad returns we see a close up of the girls reaction to her dad n then the boys. We can tell in the shot there not very well off because of the rubbish behind the father and daughter as they hug. low angle close up of boy looking at his dad not moving as if he feels as though he has to be strong after being the man of the house while the dad was gone. Extreme close up of dad hugging and crying coming in and out of focus, this could be the sister point of view crying or just representing us the audience tearing up or it is such an intimate moment that it is giving them some privacy. Low angle of the camera looking in at the family eating in front the TV, not around the table which normally the stereotypical perfect family does. This could mean they do not own a table or they are basing it on the stereotypical minimum wage (poor) family. Shot reverse shot of dad pleading after forgetting where the school is the boy shows no emotion, as if he is used to it. Close up of boy pressing buttons bored been there for a long time. Same music comes on where the boy was playing with his sister, I feel it signifies his happiness. Clip of arguing in background and shot reverse shot of the children as if they are speaking using eye contact. In the next shot the music returns for the family bowling. Medium shot of the father behind the counter in probation office this shot is effective because we do not see the man he is speaking to only the father and some pens out of focus.

Johnny Cast Hurt Music Video

Starts off with his house in a semi dark location with a guitar on a chair as if playing accapella so you can hear the emotion. With his possessions around him shows his sad and lonely despite the wealth. It then cuts to the American flag the American dream a proud American and how he feels that he is not a proud American. There is footage of the museum of Cash which has a closed to the public sign he could be there performing or his old house his moved out of which goes with the line "and you could have it all" giving away the past because it means nothing to him now. "Everyone i know goes away" shot of mother he feels sad she has gone they must have had a good relationship. Also his Friends have died over the years in his life and he feels he is just waiting for himself to die. Archive footage of him singing in the prison which he previously did. There are close up of smashed records, that he doesn't care and no one else does. His career means nothing to him now it only brought him sadness. Footage of him visiting his childhood home when he was younger smiling because he still enjoyed his life then it was still early in his career he still had most of his Friends and family, he was enjoying what the fame brought change, money and the girls living his fantasy. the lighting is bright in the archive footage to show his happiness because it was not edited to look darker. He must have been well off because 18mm was rare in those times.

The table is layed out with a feast, the dinner table is associated with family and socialising but it is empty he has material goods but no one to share it with. A picture of him and his wife in the past and them now, the room is brighter like he is the light of his life the only thing still giving him something to live for it is a low angle shot as if to give off a sense of pride. Some family footage to show what is important to him and stuff he does not mind remembering from the past. Montage with clips and also things that relate to the words he is singing. There are words which overlap some of the song ... Then as he shuts and strokes the piano it is like he is saying good bye to an old friend but not sad to see it go because the light gets brighter, it is end of a era the closing of his career.

Johnny Cast Hurt

Tyson: the movie opening

The text in the title is flames like his burning career but can also be the flames of passion for boxing. They uses the music from Rocky which is a boxing movie, iconic also showing how similar they are to each other in both ways their careers started out. There is a close up shot reverse shot face off between a young Tyson and his opponent to build up tension. The opening credits are rainbow coloured they seem childish like he feels vulnerable like a child or wants his innocence again. Introduction to the main person by the use of split screens like his several thoughts he has and wanting to get them all out as soon as they come to mind as the speaking overlaps, all of them are at different angles like he has been put under the microscope and being dissected and this is what has been extracted. There are some pictures of him reflecting by the beach as though thinking about things so he can say it on camera, bring himself back to the times. The sun shining on his face as it rises or falls is making us look at how his face has aged not just from time but the life he has had. There is no music when he speaks to show the importance of his words and how you must listen. Close up and medium shots so you concentrate on just him and see his expressions as he is telling the story. On some medium shots you notice that there are lots of cushions showing they are offering comfort and protection after a hard life and taking a battering. There is archive picture from the side close up and him now at a similar angle showing us a before and after showing the difference time has made. Cut to an archive footage clip to show how he spoke and look when he was younger and how he handled the spot light and interviews. Cut to juvenile gates closing darkened by the camera because you could see that it was daylight it creates a mood and a dark atmosphere and a diegetic sound of gate. This is when he is telling us one of his dark moments in his life and how his childhood. There is footage of his hometown it is quite fast like it is filmed from a car and it is so bad they want to just film it and get out, there is no signs telling us where it is so it could be filmed somewhere else but it is giving us a feel of what his childhood neighbourhood was like.
